Tissue Paper Stained Glass Suncatcher

I didn’t think my favorite tissue paper stained glass craft could get any better– until I started using a paper punch!

I love the tissue paper stained glass/suncatcher craft SO MUCH for the kids and myself! For the kids, it’s a great project that helps work on fine motor skills. And for me, it’s just relaxing.

Nonetheless, this craft project always produces a fun, brightly colored window decoration customizable to the season or holiday.

I typically cut the outline for these suncatcher crafts out with my Cricut. If you have a Cricut, I’ll link to my Design Space canvas below so that you can steal it. If not, I’ve also provided a printable template that you can print on cardstock, then cut out.

An alternative method is to just skip the outline completely, place the tissue paper on the contact paper, then cut out a heart shape once the tissue paper is all placed.

Anywho, even though we’ve done this type of project dozens of times (including another Valentine’s version) what I loved most about this version is that instead of cutting out tissue paper squares, I used a paper punch to cut the tissue paper out in heart shapes.

Did you know that you can use a paper punch on tissue paper?! This method is fantastic for creating confetti too! Simply fold the tissue paper so there are roughly 10 layers of paper, then squeeze the punch.

Once you’ve got your cardstock and tissue paper cut out, all that is missing in the contact paper. Stick the outline to the contact paper, then place the tissue paper pieces.

If desired, a second piece of contact paper can be used to secure everything together, then just be sure to cut out all the extra contact paper from outside of the heart shape, and your project is ready to hang in the window.

Instructions

  1. Use Cricut Design Space to create an outline of a heart with a max size 11.5 inches. You can use my Design Space canvas! Place cardstock on Cricut cutting mat and load into Cricut machine to cut.
  2. Fold tissue paper into roughly 10 layers, then use a paper punch to punch out tissue paper hearts.
  3. Use the cardstock outline heart cutout to measure out the amount of clear shelf liner necessary to cover the entire thing.
  4. Cut out clear shelf line, peel the backing, and place the heart cutout on the sticky side of the contact paper. Cut away any excess shelf liner from the exterior of the heart outline.
  5. Stick the tissue paper hearts to the clear shelf liner on the inside of the heart cutout. It's ok for pieces to overlap or go over the card stock!
  6. If desired, apply a second sheet of shelf liner to the uncovered tissue paper side. Cut off the excess contact paper from the outline. Punch a small hole in the top, to thread through a string for hanging.

I tried to place the tissue paper in a nice pattern on the suncatcher that I made, but to be honest, I really love how the girls’ turned out with the randomly placed tissue pieces.
