Team Color Muddy Buddies

Whether you know them as muddy buddies or puppy chow, there’s no denying that they’re delicious! This easy variation uses only 3 ingredients and allows you to customize the color for any holiday or to match your team colors on game day.

Living in Chiefs Kingdom for the last few years of them playing in the Super Bowl has been quite the experience. The people in Kansas and Missouri, they sure do love their team! With it looking like the Chiefs may head to the Super Bowl again this year, I wanted to share this colorful variation of the classic Chex cereal recipe.

This recipe for muddy buddies is a simplified version of the traditional recipe found on the back of the Chex box. You’ll only need 3 simple ingredients.

Muddy Buddy Ingredients

  • Candy melts
  • Chex cereal
  • Powdered sugar

Candy melts are small vanilla-flavored wafers made of chocolate. They come in a variety of colors and are fairly easy to find at most grocery or craft stores. They melt down easily and smoothly.

The variety of Chex cereal that you choose to use is entirely up to you. Rice Chex is my preferred type to buy for breakfast, so it’s what we typically have on hand for this treat. Using rice Chex will make this gluten-free.

How do you make colored Muddy Buddies?

To make muddy buddies/puppy chow, you’ll start by melting down the candy melts in the microwave. Use a large microwave-safe bowl to heat the chocolate in 30 second increments. This should only take about a minute and a half.

Add the cereal to the bowl with melted chocolate, then use a spatula to gently fold the cereal into the chocolate. Mixing in the bowl that was microwaved helps keep the chocolate warm so that it’s easier to coat the cereal completely.

The key to getting brighter more vibrant colors when making colorful muddy buddies is to quickly shake off the excess powdered sugar. The chocolate-coated cereal should be tossed in sugar just enough to get it to stick, then shaken off. The longer the cereal sits in the sugar, the more it’s going to stick to and be absorbed by the chocolate, blocking out the color.

  3. Pour 1 cup of powdered sugar into a large plastic zipper bag. Transfer the candy-coated cereal to the plastic bag with sugar.
