Chicken and Beet Dog Treats
If your Valentine is of the canine variety, these homemade chicken and beet dog treats are perfect for them! While these treats are great for anytime, the beets give them a festive red color.
If you’re a pet owner that makes homemade treats for their pets, ingredients are often the most important factor. Healthy and delicious is what we’re going for here!
In moderation, beets are a great addition to a dog’s diet. Beets contain vitamins and minerals such as: vitamin C, fiber, folate, manganese, and potassium. Add to that some chicken for protein, and you’ve got a tasty combo that even veggie-hating dogs like mine, will devour.
As with most of my homemade dog treat recipes, this one starts with ground oatmeal. While Caesar isn’t particularly sensitive to wheat or grain, I realize that there are plenty of pups out there who are. Making your own oat flour is fairly simply with a blender or food processor. Plus, it contains vitamins and minerals that are good for skin and coat.
This particular dog treat recipe calls for flattening a rolled ball of dough to produce a slightly crispier dog cookie. For a softer bite, the dough ball can be baked as-is. Also, remember to decrease baking time by a few minutes if creating a treat that is smaller than the size indicated in the recipe.
Chicken and Beet Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 1 - 1 ½ cup quick cook oatmeal
- 1/2 cup cooked chicken breast, diced
- 1/2 cup cooked beets, diced
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350º F.
- In a food processor, pulse oats until they produce a flour with minimal whole oats visible, about 30 seconds.
- Add remaining ingredients and pulse until the mixture creates a ball of dough. More oats may be necessary if the chicken or beets were extra moist. If the mixture seems too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time.
- Use a rounded tablespoon to place dough balls on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Use a spatula or the palm of your hand to flatten each ball of dough.
- Bake sheet of dog treats in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove treats from the oven then allow to cool for 2 minutes on the cookie sheet before transfering to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a week or freeze for up to 3 months.
