Tissue Paper Stained Glass Flower Craft

Tissue paper stained glass is a fantastic craft activity for kids and even adults of all ages! Hang your creations up in a window as a bright and colorful decoration!

Hello friends! I hope everyone is staying sane and safe out there!

In trying times like these, it’s always so refreshing to see communities and people in general across the globe come together. Let me tell you, I’ve absolutely been loving watching penguins tour their zoo, Grammy winners give concerts from their homes, and talented chefs offer classes over social media.

A few of the other recent trends that I’ve also become obsessed with are the creative displays that people are putting together to brighten their neighbors’ spirits as they’re walking outside. The three that we’re participating in are: chalk your walk, bear hunts, and window art galleries.

Chalk Your Walk

Chalk your walk is simple. Grab some sidewalk chalk, head out to your drive way or side walk, and create encouraging words or images for those passing by to enjoy! I ordered a HUGE box of chalk from Amazon. Bonus, side walk chalk is a fantastic way to keep the kiddos occupied while enjoying some sunshine and fresh air.

Bear Hunts

Bear hunts are inspired by the book, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. The premise is that while kids are out walking, they’re trying to spot bears that are hiding. We placed a few teddy bears in our street-facing windows.

Window Art Galleries

The window art galleries are by far my favorite new trend! We’ve kept our front window decorated for the last week and a half with themed projects made by the girls. Last week, it was shamrocks. This week, it’s flowers. I discovered a Facebook page for our base that shared a themed weekly calendar that we’ll be following.

During our little homeschool adventures, we make plenty of time for art and science projects. It truly helps keep the girls from getting too burnt out.

Today’s flower-themed project was to create tissue paper stained glass flowers. Given my love of tissue paper sun catcher projects, this was an idea we HAD to do for our window gallery. And I’m glad we did! They all turned out so beautifully! Don’t be surprised if each weekly theme ends up with a sun catcher/stained glass project.

This project starts out like most of my craft projects do– with the Cricut! Using black 12″ x 12″ card stock, I cut out a variety of flower outlines. I used Cricut images for these flowers, so my canvas is available for anyone with Design Space to use! Just delete the flowers you don’t want to use!

Each flower outline is then stuck onto a clear sheet of shelf-liner. You can find this stuff anywhere from Walmart, to Dollar Tree, to Home Depot. I actually ordered mine from Amazon.

Next comes the fun part! Sticking on little squares of tissue paper! Amazon sells pre-cut tissue paper squares, or you can easily cut it yourself. These craft projects actually require very little tissue paper, so it’s not difficult to quickly cut it out. Plus, if you’re anything like me, you’ve got an entire container of tissue paper begging to be used!

Typically, when I’m done perfectly place all of my little squares, I’ll add a second sheet of shelf liner to the uncovered side of the project, to protect it on both side. Since the plan for the next few weeks is to create a bunch of these projects, I figured I’d conserve materials. So far, the projects seem to be holding up just fine.

Regardless of whether there is a back cover to the project or not, the final step is to cut the excess clear shelf liner off. Usually, with sharp scissors, the blade simply glides along the edge of the card stock, producing a smooth clean edge. You can then take a hole punch and use a string to hang the project or simply tape it to the window.

Aren’t they lovely?!

This project can be tailored to suit any age child, by simply cutting the tissue paper into larger or smaller squares. The larger squares are much simpler for younger children to use, and helps the project goes a tiny bit faster for them!

Instructions

  1. Using Cricut Design Space, create an outline of a flower sized at a max of 11.5 inches. This is the exact Design Space canvas I used! Place cardstock on Cricut cutting mat and load into Cricut machine and cut.
  2. Using scissors, cut a variety of colors of tissue paper into approximately 1 inch squares.
  3. Use the flower outline to measure out the amount of clear shelf liner necessary.
  4. Cut out clear shelf line, peel the backing, and place the flower cutout on the sticky side of the contact paper.
  5. Stick the tissue paper squares to the clear shelf line on the inside of the heart cutout. It's ok for pieces to overlap or go over the card stock!
  6. Cut away any excess shelf liner from the exterior of the flower outline.
