Naval War College Army Ball 2019

Happy hump day! I’ve recovered. The house has recovered. So I’m finally getting around to sharing about our weekend. And probably some other things.

We had a house full of kiddos this weekend, since our next door neighbor left her 3 with us. Thankfully, they’re super well behaved, but nonetheless, I was ready to hand over all 6 littles to the baby sitter when she arrived Saturday evening for us to head to the Army ball.

This time around, I went to a pro for hair and makeup. Holy cow, what a difference it makes when someone with talent helps get your face ready. I am not skilled in the hair or makeup department at all. I will absolutely continue going to a pro in the future. It was SO worth it for me.

I discovered the dress I wore a few months back, when I was researching my Amazon Ball Gown post. I waited until the end of April to order though, in case I gained too much weight in Europe or possibly decided to get my shit together and drop some weight before the ball. Neither of those happened, and the size I ordered showed up fitting me perfectly!

Not only do I plan to wear this dress again (possibly to the Military Police ball in Kansas this fall), but I also plan to order it in different colors. This time around, I ordered it in green, to match with my my award and John’s new mess dress uniform. The quality was top-notch, and it had pockets!!! You just can’t beat that for $89!

I’ve never been a Rent the Runway fan, and after my neighbor getting TWO separate shipments that didn’t work for her, I’m convinced that Amazon (or another favorite–Lightinthebox) is the way to go. You end up paying the same and sometimes less than RTR, for a dress you get to keep!

Back to the event. Since we weren’t able to score tickets from the lottery to the holiday ball, I voluntold John that he’d be working on the Army ball committee to guarantee we’d be able to purchase the tickets. Poor thing. The committee worked so hard to put together a fantastic event.

Bless his little heart. He got roped into MCing too.

The Army ball was hosted at the Glen Manor House, in Portsmouth. It was a bit of a drive from Newport, (like 30 minutes) but well worth it. The house was built by a Gold Star family, whose son was killed in France in WWI. While not nearly as grand as some of the Newport mansions, it was the perfect venue for our event.

We had free rein of the lawn and patio outside, plus the home. Thank goodness, the weather cooperated! It’s been nasty here lately, but for the event we had a lovely 60s and sunny day!

The open bar guaranteed that I spent the entire next day in bed, which I guess was fine, since it was Mother’s Day. Way to plan that ahead, Army. 😜

We’re now down to exactly one month of school left! John will graduate from the Naval War College on June 14, and we’ll do his promotion ceremony the day before. Ah! Time sure is flying by here! Our year here in Newport has been nothing short of spectacular!
