Weekend in Maine

When John told me he had made plans for us to head to Maine this past weekend, I was honestly a bit…pissy. We spent the weekend in Boston just a few weeks ago and with as busy as this holiday season is, I just wanted to stay home

After much complaining on my part, we dropped the kids off with friends in Boston and continued on our way up to Maine. It was a surprisingly easy drive up! Only about 3 hours total, from our home in Newport to Ogunquit and just a bit further for Kennebunkport!

We stopped in Ogunquit first, since John had seen that they had some Christmas event going on. We drove around town a little bit, before deciding on where to park. The town was having a Christmas parade, so parking was scarce, but we managed to find a spot next to an antique shop. I insisted on heading into the antique shop, purely out of guilt, and I’m glad we did!

At first I was on the hunt for a vintage ceramic Christmas tree. There were a handful of them, but none that really called to me. While we were searching, I stumbled upon some vintage Jim Beam decanters. We learned all about these bottles when we did the Jim Beam Distillery tour in Kentucky, so I was excited to snatch one up! Plus, it had a great discount!

As we were paying, the sweet old lady ringing us up, noticed that the tag was her husband’s handwriting, and told us that he had been gone for 8 years. So sweet! I’m thinking I’ll probably leave the tag on for forever.

We walked a bit before finding an adorable little bar/cafe where we’d be able to watch the town’s little Christmas parade. The food was half off, and they had some tasty drinks! Spiked hot cocoa with Bailey’s whipped cream?! Yes, please! You better believe I’ll be trying to recreate this deliciousness when the family is all here!

Once the parade in Ogunquit finished, we headed up the road to Kennebunkport for some more Christmas town touring! The hotel that we stayed at was decorated SO beautifully! I couldn’t stop taking photos!

The town itself was SO beautiful with a giant Christmas tree and wreaths/garland everywhere! We HAD to stop for a photo with the lobster tree! AND we couldn’t skip the lobster trap Christmas tree!

As many of my military spouse friends have suggested, I opted to pick up a Christmas tree ornament in lieu of a junky little souvenir. It’s the perfect memory from our visit to Maine and won’t sit around in the way getting dusty the rest of the year!

Although, now that I think about it, I also picked up a tiny mason jar at that same gift shop to collect beach sand in. I scooped up a little sand, along with a rock from a beach near Walker’s Point.  I was really hoping to catch a glimpse of W, but it didn’t seem like anyone was at the estate.

The trip home was easy peasy, with a quick stop to pick up the girls. I really had no desire to visit Maine, but I’m so glad we did! What a wonderful weekend away!
