The Weekend – Newport
Hello! Happy Monday, and welcome to Fall!
Unlike anywhere else we’ve ever lived, Newport definitely got the memo that seasons were changing! A week ago, I couldn’t wear jeans without sweating through them. Today, I wore my fancy coat to the bus stop with the girls. It’s been cool and breezy and nice, but I wasn’t ready!
We still have to release the butterflies as well! I had hoped to send them on their way yesterday, but it seemed like it was just a little too cool for them. Even though, the instructions that come along with them, says anything above 55º is fine. I’m hoping that the afternoon warms up a bit and I can take them down to the bus stop to release them once the kids are out of school!
It’s been so much fun watching the butterflies grow from caterpillars! I bought the butterfly garden and feeding kit off of Amazon with two cups of caterpillars (affiliate link). There were supposed to be 5 caterpillars in each cup, but we ended up with 6! I ordered the two cups just in case everyone didn’t make it, but I’m happy to report that we’re 12/12!
Anyway! Over the weekend we had grand plans of heading up to Boston, hopping on a trolley, and touring the city. Needless to say, that didn’t happen. We woke up Saturday morning with little motivation to drive for 2+ hours, so we didn’t.
Determined to not waste the entire day, we hopped on the ferry that goes from our neighborhood across the harbor to downtown. We walked a little, shopped a little, and got some lunch and ice cream.
John picked up this gorgeous handblown glass pineapple from a glass store on the main strip. Their alternate location does glass blowing lessons, which I am determined to do before they close for winter! We had tried to do a glass blowing glass in Kentucky, but the timing didn’t work out. Fingers crossed that we’re able to get it done here! I’m totally mesmerized by this video of their lesson!
Now, backtracking to Friday night, we did a little neighborhood potluck. It was totally last minute, but surprisingly, almost everyone was able to make it out! We let the kids run free through the community center while the adults mostly hung out on the back patio overlooking the ocean.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again–we got SO lucky living here! While the house itself is nothing to write home about, the location is fantastic. The people are pretty amazing too, and we all get along so well.
We’ve always had the “live off-post” mind set, but in comparing all of our off-post experiences to our two on-post experiences, I’m leaning towards base living in the future! We’ll have to see what the future has in store! It’s crazy to think that John has less than 4.5 years left until retirement! That’s basically only one more duty station (although I’m sure he’ll go way past 20 years).
And with that, I’m off to tackle the day. I had planned on riding my bike around the island, but there’s not enough sun and too much breeze, so I’ll save it for another day! Hope your week is off to a wonderful start!
