Guava Pastry Recipe

Almost 9 years ago I married a Soldier and moved away from home for the very first time. I was 22 when I moved away from Miami to Georgia, and I haven’t looked back! Living the military life has brought it’s share of adventures and new cultures in various parts of the country. If there’s one thing I do miss about Miami though, it’s the food and culture that I grew up with!
My mom came to the US from Cuba many, many, years ago. I grew up eating the best Cuban dishes at home and all around South Florida! As a result of moving away from the food that I love the most, I learned how to make it on my own, so that no matter where the Army takes us, I’ll always have my favorite tastes of Cuba!
One of the very first things I learned to make on my own was good Cuban coffee. Abuela (my grandma) used to make amazing Cuban coffee in the morning. She would mix it with milk to make cafe con leche for us kids. I
Abuela always used Café Bustelo®, in an espresso pot on the stove. It has a rich flavor that stands up to milk and sugar, plus it’s oh so good black. Since it’s the coffee I grew up drinking, it’s what I’ve always used as an adult.
Imagine my surprise though as I was strolling through Target (in Hawaii, nonetheless!) and I spotted Café Bustelo K-Cup® Pods on the shelf! WHAT?! Café Bustelo K-Cup Pods making brewing up a cup of delicious coffee for breakfast a breeze while still connecting me to my Hispanic heritage. It is Hispanic Heritage Month, after all!
Guava pastries (aka pastelitos) are another staple from home that I learned to make on my own! Often served alongside a mug of cafe con leche, they’re the perfect breakfast or anytime treat. And pretty easy to make! Take a look at the recipe below!
Guava Pastries
Ingredients
- 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
- 8 oz. guava paste
- 1 egg
- Sugar
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 F. While the oven is preheating, roll both thawed puff pastry sheet to approximately 9" x 12". Cut each sheet into 12 3"x3" squares.
- Cube the guava paste, and place in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave the guava paste at 20 second intervals for about 1 minute total, stirring at each interval, until completely melted and smooth.
- Spoon a hefty tablespoon of melted guava paste to the center of 12 of the puff pastry squares. Top each of the filled puff pastry squares with the remaining unused puff pastry squares. Press down firmly the edges.
- Beat an egg to create an egg wash. Brush the egg wash on the tops of the pastries and sprinkle each with a pinch of sugar if desired.
- Bake in the oven for 18-20 minutes, or until the tops are golden. Allow cooked pastries to cool slightly before enjoying, as the filling will be hot!
Notes
For guava and cheese pastries, place a small pat of cream cheese directly on top of the melted guava paste.
Pro tip: typically pastelitos filled solely with guava are cut into a square shape, while ones made with guava and cheese and cut into triangle shapes!
There are few things tastier than dunking a nice warm and flaky pastry into hot coffee and milk.
