Realities of Life in 2017
I woke up this morning not knowing what I was going to blog about today. Just moments later, my husband walked into our room asking if I had heard what happened. Within seconds of logging on to social media, there it was. Another shooting.
And now here I am writing. Real talk. I wish I could say that I was shocked by what happened in Las Vegas, but the reality is that these horrific tragedies happen far too frequently.
We live in a world where sending my children to school gives me anxiety. When I walk them to their classrooms, I think about how likely a gunman is to enter their classroom based on proximity to main doors. And I take comfort in knowing that the doors are locked throughout the day.
When we go to the movies, I find myself obsessively watching the doors in the theater instead of actually watching the movie. My stomach sinks each time I see light peek through an open door and a person pauses at the bottom of the stairs.
Is that normal?! It’s not! It can’t be!
But it’s not even just guns that are worrisome. With so much hatred in the world, almost anything can be used as a weapon these days. Cars, semi-trucks, pressure cookers. It’s sad and scary. But it seems like that’s the reality of life in 2017. Something obviously needs to change.
