Just Like Grandma Used to Do
Think back to some of your favorite childhood memories. For me, many of those memories revolve around time spent with my grandma. My parents worked crazy schedules while my siblings and I were growing up, so “Auela” (abuela is Spanish for grandma) was always home with us. From cooking, to cleaning, to wellness, so many of Auela’s habits have stuck with me well into adulthood.
She used to make us these egg sandwiches, just a scrambled eggs between buttered bread, that are still one of my favorite lunches. I also make my boxed mac and cheese just how she used to. Boil the noodles in milk for the creamiest pasta you’ve ever had! It’s a good thing I paid attention too, because now that we’ve moved away from Miami, there is zero to no chance of finding decent Cuban food outside of my kitchen.
I also fondly remember the routine she’d have for us when one of us happened to get sick. It was simple, but it always seemed to be exactly what we needed. A sore throat was met with honey and juice squeezed fresh from the key lime tree in our back yard.
Coughs and congestion were easily tackled with a smear of Vicks VapoRub on our chest and neck. I mean, I think most Hispanics can agree that Vaporú (as Auela would say) cures it all! It was an added bonus when she would sit next to us in bed and rub it on our backs.
Because I remember how well Vicks VapoRub worked, it’s typically the first thing I reach for when the girls are feeling under the weather. I don’t have to worry about making them swallow anything, and since it’s safe for those two years and older, it’s a fantastic alternative for little ones who aren’t quite old enough for cough medicine. Just a little bit of those soothing vapors seem to always do the trick. The added back rub is obviously a must as well!
