The Guest List

So there’s this sort of routine that we go through every time we have visitors here in Hawaii. All of the must-dos and must-sees of the island. Since we’ve had a few visitors already, we have this routine down pretty well. With John’s fraternity brother coming into town tonight, there’s another opportunity for us to show him all of our local favorites. John will still be busy with inventories during the week, so it’s all on me to act as tour guide.

As far as history goes, Pearl Harbor is always one of the must see sights! Usually we simply go into the open area that doesn’t require tickets. If we’re feeling adventurous though, you can show up in the morning to grab tickets for the memorial.

When in Hawaii do as the Hawaiians, right? So luau it is! So far we’ve done Paradise Cove and the Hale Koa, so this time around we’ll be choosing a different one.

Heading to the world-famous North Shore is super easy from where we live. A stroll through Waimea Valley, followed by a dip at my favorite beach, Waimea Beach Park, is the perfect combo of all the best Oahu has to offer. A hike, waterfall, and crystal blue water.

On the way home, passing through Haleiwa is a must! I didn’t used to bother, but after Kait insisted on stopping at Matsumoto’s for shave ice, it’s been added to the guest list. As we continue through the town either Kono’s or Killer Tacos is where we stop for food.

Usually there is a big hike included, but that’s all John. No way I’m dragging along three tots with me on that. So far, the go-to place has been Koko Head. I’m considering mixing things up and trying Diamond Head this time around, but I don’t want to get too crazy.

The nice thing about both of those hikes is that they’re over near the windward side of the island. That side has all the great views! Usually we’ll do a driving tour that passes by Hanauma Bay, the Blowhole, and Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail. There are a few scenic rest stops along the way that we pull over at each of those.

One of the last things we do with our guests is always to take them to the Monkey Pod in Ko’Olina. It’s easily become our favorite restaurant on the island. The food is local sourced and so fresh and delicious. They have a mix of all sorts of dishes, but John’s favorite is the ahi. He says is smooth like butter.

Normally we skip Waikiki, other than a quick drive through, since the area is so touristy and crowded.
