Making The Switch

When I get an idea in my head there is usually no stopping me until I give it a shot. I don’t always succeed, but at least I can always say that I made an attempt. Well, after taking an online blogging course, I decided that I had to make the switch to WordPress. I finally realized that WordPress wasn’t this big scary blogging platform and that many great bloggers use it, so it couldn’t be that hard to learn.

On Friday, I made the decision to jump in head first (or is it feet first?) and go ahead and buy website hosting. Once it was said and done, I realized that it wasn’t so bad. Back in middle school, I used to have a blog-ish website, so I was pretty familiar with the cPanel and all that..

From there, I figured it would be a good idea to transfer my domain from GoDaddy, to my current host. Bad idea. Kinda. It took me a while to figure out how to transfer and then when I finally did, I realized that my blog was probably going to be down for a while. Cool. I purposely did it over the weekend since blog readers are out doing cool things. Except for me.

And then it was Sunday… I had a sponsored post due Monday morning and there was no sign of my blog reviving itself. Oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit. Do I email the community director and let her know that due to impulses and poor planning, I wasn’t going to be able to submit the post on time. No, play it cool. So I waited. And finally, I got an email letting me know that I was back in business. Now I just needed to install a pretty little blog design, migrate my blog (which was EASY, btw.), and start typing. Except that whole learning to use WordPress thing was in my way.

After several frustrating hours and immeasurable mental turmoil, I’m happy to report that I’m starting to get a hang of this scary blogging thing. I’ve discovered the wonderful world of plugins (freaking amazing) and at this point, I’m even comfortable with moving widgets around. It’s going to take some learning before I feel comfortable enough to dive into html and code like I was able to do in Blogger, but considering the progress I’ve made in the past 24 hours, I might be designing blogs by the end of the week. Just kidding.

I am, however, looking forward to conquering the beast known as WordPress and hopefully help make it less scary for those considering making the switch.
