A Kitchen Addition

When we were house hunting online from Hawaii for a Kentucky house, I pretty much instantly fell in love with our current home. The only downside was the kitchen. It was slightly smaller than our Hawaii kitchen and WAY smaller than our Georgia kitchen.

The nice thing about the home we built in Georgia, was being able to add our own personal touches to the house. There was one afternoon that we sat down with the builders, a husband and wife team, and our floor plan. We were able to take whiteout on the paper plan and draw in new walls. The result was no more sitting room in the master, and a giant kitchen.

With knocking down walls being a no-go in our already built house, I wanted to add some function to the big empty wall in our smaller kitchen. As I was wandering Hobby Lobby one day, I found the perfect solution! A giant chalk board!

With a little stain and a few screws, I got the perfect board hanging up on the wall! Over the weekend, I got my Cricut set up in my new office, and cut some vinyl for the board. I used Oracal 631, which is the removable type of vinyl, since it’s matte and kinda chalky looking. Plus, it will be easy to remove if/when I want to change it.

I’ve been using Chalkola chalk markers to fill in the lists on the board. I like these chalk markers, because they’re easy to use and come in a variety of bright and bold colors! An added bonus is that the chalk from these markers doesn’t wipe off as easily as regular chalk would, so no losing my shopping list! The chalk does wipe off with minimal effort using a cloth and a little water.

For the big “happy birthday” on top, I used the 15mm chalk markers. For the smaller words, the 6mm markers are easier to use. The 6mm markers even come with some pretty metallic markers, which I’ll use for special occasions. There’s even a coupon code (15OFFSTR) for 15% off!

Now that I have my machine set up, I’m thinking I might even try making stencils to draw on the board in the future. Let’s be honest, my handwriting is not the greatest!
