My Cleaning Routine

From the time Veronica was born, until she was mobile, it was nearly impossible to keep her happy. No matter what we did she would cry and cry and cry. It wasn’t until much later, that I realized what she was lacking, was routine.

I’ve come to notice that not only does a solid routine make the girls’ lives easier, but it makes mine easier as well. I thrive on a good routine, but getting that routine established and making it consistent has been a challenge for me. With the help of my planner, I’ve been giving myself little reminders here and there to stay on track. One such reminder, is with my daily chores.

While John was gone to the field recently, I knew I couldn’t let myself get behind on housework, or it would become overwhelming. Between everything the girls and I have going on during the week, there was no way I’d be able to catch up, if I got lazy. And believe me, when my husband is gone, I love to be lazy!

I started by first sitting down, and deciding what I wanted my typical weekly chore schedule to be. I thought this through thoroughly, so it would be something that made sense for our home. Then, I made stickers!

Daily
  • Tidy up around house
  • Put toys away
  • Wipe down counters
  • Wipe down table
  • Take out trash/recycling when necessary
  • Vacuum/mop

For each day of the week, I’ll be tackling one room, and one load of laundry. Each room should be cleaned top to bottom, including dusting or wiping down the furniture

Monday
  • Room(s): kitchen/dining room
  • Laundry: towels

Our kitchen usually looks pretty rough come Monday morning, as we tend to spend the majority of our weekend time relaxing or exploring the island. I saved the towel load for Monday, since we typically have a laundry room full of them from beaching during the weekend.

Tuesday
  • Room(s): master bedroom/guest room
  • Laundry: Darks/uniforms

John wears a specific PT shirt on Mondays and Fridays, so waiting to do his uniform laundry until Tuesday, guarantees that he’ll have at least one clean shirt for Friday. The shirt from the previous Friday should also be in this load.

Wednesday
  • Room(s): Kids
  • Laundry: Kids

We aren’t home much on Wednesdays, so picking up the girls’ room this day is ideal, as they usually have to wait an entire day to destroy it again. Gymnastics is also this day, so doing kid laundry Wednesday morning means there should be clean leotards for practice.

Thursday
  • Room(s): living room
  • Laundry: brights

There’s no rhyme or reason to this day. These were the left over options.

Friday
  • Room(s): bathrooms
  • Laundry: bedding

Just in case we have guest over throughout the weekend, I want to make sure that the bathrooms are presentable. The girls’ bathroom is also the guest bathroom, which ends up looking like a war zone by week end. Why I keep buying blue and green toothpaste? I don’t know. For laundry, honestly, is there anything better than climbing into nice fresh sheets at the end of a week?!

I’ve been working on this for a couple of weeks now. It’s still not habit, but I’m getting there.

I love how these stickers turned out, so I plan on continuing to make them to match each of my monthly planner themes. I haven’t gotten around to creating stickers for October yet, but I figured stickers in autumn shades would be perfect.
