Keeping Your Home Safe

As a mom of three children under the age of 6, I like to think that I know a thing or two about keeping them safe. I can say it’s certainly be a learning process throughout the years though! There are a plethora of household dangers, that often go unnoticed until there is a close call.

With Juli now being mobile and getting into everything, it’s more important than ever to keep potential hazards from becoming tragedies. There are steps that we can take, as parents, to maintain the well being of our children. After all, it only takes a second for an everyday item to become a danger.

The first thing you want to do, is something that many experts recommend. Get down on your hands and knees so that you’re at toddler eye-level, and start looking for items that could be dangerous. Some examples include:

  • Uncovered outlet
  • Window blind cord
  • Unsecured TV
  • Fireplace
  • Handbag content
  • Sharp edges
  • Coins
  • Leaning mirror

Secure the items that are able to be secured, such as furniture and TVs. Put away any small items that have the potential to become choking hazards. Use outlet plugs to cover unused outlets, and store window blind cords where they can’t be reached.

Next, be sure that any and all cleaning supplies are properly sealed and stored out of reach. In our home, all of the cabinets have child-safety locks on them. We’ve drilled into the older girls’ heads that these cabinets contain poisons and that they are not allowed to touch them!

Because our laundry room doesn’t have any cabinets, I ensure that detergents are sealed, and up on an inaccessible shelf. I love how easy Tide Pods make laundry time, but it’s also easy for them to end up in little hands if you’re not careful! When using pacs, such as Tide Pods, always firmly close the bag or tub and safely store it up and away, out of reach from children and pets.. Keep Them Up, Keep Them Closed and Keep Them Safe.

Finally, follow the same precaution for medications. They should be properly closed in a child-lock container, and put away in a medicine cabinet that can not be reached. Be sure to check your night stand and under your bathroom sink for these items!

Like any household detergent, keep away from children
