Soda Bottle Bird Feeder

One of the fun little activities that the girls and I did while John was away, was to make a little bird feeder out of an empty soda bottle. It was a slightly educational activity that fed off of their interest in birds.

The girls love to watch the birds from the window, and Juli loves to chase them every time I take her out of the car. When Juli comes out of her car seat, so does an assortment of Goldfish, Cheerios, and the like. The birds in the neighborhood know to flock over when they see that door open.

Veronica helped me out with all of the technical aspects of making our bird feeding. I found a couple of wooden dowels in my craft drawers, and had her find a drill bit that matched the width. I drilled through a few spots on the bottle to stick the wooden dowels in as little perches for the birds. Using a few dabs of hot glue, I made sure to secure the perches.

Next, I had V choose the largest bit in our tool kit, to make the holes for the birds to eat out of. Each of these holes was drilled in a couple inches above the dowels.

We then used a funnel to pour some bird seed into the top of the bottle. The bottle was sealed up, and we took it outside with some twine. There is a little tree in our front yard that we attached the feeder to. The girls then had a blast throwing some of the extra bird seeds into the area around the tree.

Lucky for the girls, the bird feeder is right outside of our living room window, so they’ve been able to sit on the couch and watch the birds snack. We’ve seen a whole bunch of birds in a variety of sizes and colors. Such a great outcome to a great little project!

I thought I was pretty creative for coming up with this idea. Turns out, there’s a better version on Pinterest, that uses wooden spoons. Oh well. I’ve got plenty of bottles to try again with!
