Traveling the Road to Hana – Maui

Right between Christmas and New Years, John and I took a child-free three day trip to Maui (and Lanai). We didn’t do much research or planning of activities before hoping on the air plane to Maui, but there were a few things that we knew we wanted to do. The Road to Hana was one of those things.

Basically, what the Road to Hana is, is a long stretch of winding road along Maui’s north east coast. It starts off in the touristy town of Paia, and ends in Hana. For about 60 miles, you’re taking hairpin turns or crossing one-way bridges, while catching breathtaking views of waterfalls or the Pacific.

Along the road, there are also plenty of places to stop. We stopped at fruit stands, water falls, an arboretum, and one of the many places selling banana bread. Oh! And I can’t forget the black sand at Waianapanapa State Park.

In total, the trip took us about seven hours, there and back. However, you have to take into account that we stopped at several places and even managed to swim at a few of them.

If you have a day to kill in Maui, this is definitely something that I would recommend doing! It was even better, considering that we didn’t have the kids along for the ride.
