If you’re a crafter like I am, the upcoming holidays probably have your giddy with ideas to create. Even if you’re not a crafter, whipping up a few glittery votives is fast and easy. Since jack-o-lantern don’t seem to last very long here in Hawaii, these jars will be the perfect decoration to welcome Trick or Treaters.
Not only is this pretty little Halloween craft easy to make, it’s also easy on the pocketbook. In fact, you may already have almost everything you need in your home. If not, you can easily find it all at Walmart, for cheap. While you’re there, make sure you pick up a big bag of Halloween candy to enjoy while you craft. Or while you make dinner, with children screaming in the background.. 😉
For this project you’ll need:
- Glass jars
- Mod Podge (I’ve used both matte and gloss)
- A few drops of water
- Extra fine glitter
- Black vinyl, tape, or even just paper
- A disposable cup or two
Directions:
- Start by making sure that the inside of your jars are clean and dry.
- In a disposable cup, mix a small amount of Mod Podge and a few drops of water. You want to thin the Mod Podge out just slightly, so that it’s easy to coat the inside of the jar.
- Pour your Mod Podge mixture into your first jar. Swirl the Mod Podge around so that it coats the entire interior of the jar.
- Pour any excess Mod Podge back into your cup. Then rest your jar, opening side down in the cup for a couple minutes, to allow any extra to drip out.
- Lightly sprinkle the extra fine glitter along the entire interior of the jar. Rotate the jar to ensure an even coating of glitter.
- For the outside, cut your vinyl/tape/paper to your desired shapes (template I used here and .svg file here) and adhere to exterior of jar. I used my Cricut to cut the shapes out of vinyl but you could easily use scissors as well.
- Allow to dry for a few hours before attempting to put candles in the jar. Use caution if using candles with actual flame, vs. LED candles.
Last year, we nearly ran out of Trick or Treat candy on Halloween. This year, we’ll be prepared with two BIG bags of Hershey’s candy from Walmart! Since we live on the intersection of two busy streets on base, there’s no telling how many little ghosts and goblins we’ll encounter.
The best part is that unlike the sad jack-o-lanterns that my husband is always in charge of disposing of come November 1st, these beautiful jars will last forever.
