Red, White & Blue Trifle
Trifles are one of my favorite ways to put together simple and delicious desserts. This red, white, and blue trifle is perfect for celebrating the 4th of July or any patriotic event!
Tonight is the Army Birthday here in Hawaii! I’m home with the kids, but John went because it’s one of those recommended events. It would have been nice to attend, but it’s so expensive and I plan on attending the Military Police ball later this year anyway.
In any case, I was feeling patriotic, so I enlisted the girls’ help with throwing together this red, white, and blue trifle. I love trifles because they’re messy, delicious, and you really can’t make them wrong. This one was so simple to make that the girls actually ended up doing most of the work. Veronica even helped with slicing the berries. Eek! To start, I bought an angel food cake from the store. Ya gotta love an easy dessert where you don’t actually have to bake anything! I did make the whipped cream though. I saw a Starbucks copycat online that I had been dying to try! With 2 cups heavy whipping cream, 1/4 cup powdered sugar, and a tablespoon of vanilla, this one came close. The second time around. The first time I ended up with butter. Oops!
So to throw everything together, we start with a layer of cake on the bottom. I sliced about 3/4 inch slices of cake and used a little star-shaped cutter to cut a start out of each slice. The girls took each slice and broke them apart to a few smaller pieces.
On top of the cake layer went half of the whipped cream. I spread it evenly around while trying to not make a huge mess on the sides of the bowl. Finally the blue berries and sliced strawberries went on top. Repeat x1. I used the little stars to line the bowl on the top layer of cake. Veronica insisted on saving one star to place it on top.
