My New Watch
For our anniversary this year, John and I gifted each other Apple Watches. Although we’re Apple people, I originally had no interest in the watch, but after John mentioned getting them, it was like I had to have it. While we were in Florida, we marched into an Apple Store, to get the watches, only to realize that they weren’t sold in stores. We’d have to order online and wait a few weeks for them to finally start shipping.
Last week, my watch finally shipped! I got it Thursday and have rarely parted with it since. Since it isn’t water proof, the watch comes off for showers and bath time, sometimes when I’m in the kitchen cooking or cleaning, and at night to charge. It’s fancy and calculated your heart rate, daily steps, and active calories burned (among other things), so I like to keep it on as often as possible.
Although I’m pretty comfortable with Apple products, there was a bit of a learning curve with the watch. I’m sure if I had bothered to read the directions, it wouldn’t have been as difficult to learn, but who has time to read directions?! I’m still adjusting, but after a week, I think I have a pretty good handle on how everything works.
What I Love
- One touch contact to my faves. With the touch of a button, I’m taken to my favorites list (the same one as my phone) and I can scroll through and call or text them with two taps. When John’s watch arrives, I’ll be able to send him doodles and my heartbeat like this too.
- The fitness tracker. I’ve been wanting one for a while, so having this one, plus all the extras is fantastic! I’ve worked out once since getting the watch and it was really good about calculating distance and steps. Am I really only burning 300 calories during an hour long work out?!
- Text and phone calls on my wrist. I wouldn’t use this in public, but I can make and receive calls on the watch. I also receive text messages and am given the option to either select from the predictive text, or speak my response.
- Paying for Starbucks. The Starbucks app is one of the many that are downloadable to the watch. Using Passbook I can pay for coffee or scan my Target Cartwheel bar code.
- The moving emojis. At first I thought I was going to be stuck with only one face, but upon exploring, I realized that turning the dial gradually changes the emoji’s face. There is also a heart and a hand that you change using the dial.
What I’m not loving
- Charging daily. Each night when I go to bed, I take the watch off and connect it to it’s magnetic charger. Ideally, I’d love to wear it 24/7, but the charge only lasts for a day.
- Missing texts. The texts aren’t actually missing, but I sometimes dismiss the text alert and forget to respond. Responding through voice isn’t the most convenient, so I do a lot of dismissing.
- Limited displays. I guess I shouldn’t expect too much from a watch, but I was disappointed that only my “faved” photos from my phone are in the album on the watch. Instagram and Twitter also only show the five or six most recent post, and as of yet, I haven’t figured out how to refresh the feed.
I’ve never been a watch wearer, but Apple now has me hooked!
