When our family first moved into military housing here in Hawaii, one of the things that I was most looking forward to was meeting our new neighbors. I had these grand plans for coffee dates in the mornings and wine every evening with these strangers who would quickly become part of our Army family.
The first time I heard a knock on our door, I was instantly filled with excitement. Up until moving to Hawaii, I had never been welcomed by a neighbor. It’s such a simple and kind gesture that I still appreciate to this day. Unfortunately, there just wasn’t that connection with the person on the other side of the door, and I was back to square one.
With PCS season (this is when a good chunk of military families move to a new duty station) quickly creeping up on us, I’m so excited to finally have the chance to welcome some new families to the neighborhood. Our next door neighbors will be moving back to the mainland this summer, which means that once again, I might have the opportunity to create a new friendship.
Apparently, in this day and age, showing up with warm cookies is creepy, so I decided to create a little welcome basket to help the new family settle in. Since it takes a little while for household goods to ship over, I figured that dropping off a few essentials would help break the ice.
Inside the welcome basket you’ll find:
- Disinfecting wipes: To get a head start on cleaning surfaces in the house.
- Toilet paper: Because everyone needs to go and it’s probably not an item you think you pack in your suitcase.
- Softsoap Liquid Foaming Hand Wash: For clean, soft hands that smell great.
- A hand towel: Instead of wasting a bunch of paper towels to dry off clean hands.
- Mason jars: Durable glasses for drinks, since our refrigerators dispense water.
- Paper plates: For those take out meals that they’ll probably be having.
- Snacks: Just a couple of items to kill hunger while settling in.
I included all three scents of Softsoap Liquid Foaming Hand Wash, so that there would be easy access to soap no matter which area of the house the new neighbors were in. Kitchen Citrus Bliss for the kitchen, Jasmine and White Cotton to use downstairs, and Whipped Cocoa Butter for the upstairs bathroom.
I already had most of the basket items on hand in my pantry, but for the Softsoap Liquid Foaming Hand Wash and the basket itself, I made a quick trip to Walmart. I was able to pick up all three scents of the premium foaming hand soap at an affordable price.
Putting this basket together was fun and easy. I can’t wait to give it away in hopes of a new friendship blooming. And if it doesn’t happen, I still have some amazing friends here and at least I’ll know that my neighbors hands are clean.
