Galaxy Dough

I’ve been reluctant to leave the house with the girls this lately. I worry about leaving Caesar at home alone. Plus, it’s just plain difficult to keep your sanity while trying to wrangle three little people in public. Even though we occasionally get bored, I find it’s sometimes easier to just stay home. Cue mom guilt.

Normally I’m totally against Play Doh, but I figured the girls would enjoy making galaxy dough as an activity that fit into our homeschool-ish theme. It took longer than anticipated to find the perfect recipe, but when I did find it, it was perfect! Ugh, and even now as I’m trying to find the site to link back to it, I’m having trouble finding it. That’s what happens when you don’t pin, folks! Luckily, I took a picture on the recipe, so that I’d have all the correct measurements with me in the kitchen.

Galaxy Play Dough Recipe

This is a dough recipe that you have to cook, but it only took a few minutes to come together and really didn’t leave much of a mess to clean up afterward. It actually turned out so nicely, that I wouldn’t mind making it again.

  • 1 cup water
  • Black Food Coloring
  • 1 tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 1 cup Flour
  • 1/4 cup Salt
  • 2 tsp Cream of Tartar
  • Glitter

Instructions

  1. In a pot over medium low heat, combine water, food coloring and oil. I used Wilton coloring and needed to add a decent amount.
  2. Add flour, salt, and cream of tartar.
  3. Stir until the mixture forms a large ball.
  4. Remove from heat.
  5. Place ball on floured surface and make an well in the ball to add desired amount of glitter. Careful, it will still be slightly hot!
  6. Knead the dough and glitter together.
  7. Store in an airtight container.
The girls had so much fun playing with glittery dough. This recipe made enough for each of them to have a nice sized ball of their own. We have it sitting in a bag on our counter and it seems to be holding up nicely with a smooth soft texture still.
