Two-Ingredient Homemade Dog Treats Recipe

My sweet Caesar boy got a bath the other day. Although he was extremely well behaved, I know it isn’t exactly the most pleasant experience for a dog. For that reason, I thought he deserved to be rewarded with some homemade dog treats afterwards.

Not too long ago I saw a Facebook post about homemade dog treats, so I decided to give my own easier dog treat recipe a try. These treats took only a few minutes to mix together.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups Oatmeal
  • 2 4 oz jars Turkey/Chicken & Sweet Potato/Pumpkin Baby Food (make sure that baby food doesn't contain garlic, onion, or other ingredients which may be harmful to your dog.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Grind up the oatmeal in a food processor.
  3. Add the baby food to the food processor and combine with the oatmeal to create a thick mixture.
  4. Use a spoon to drop balls of the oatmeal mixture onto a baking sheet. I did tablespoon sized balls for my big guy.
  5. Bake for approximately 20-22 minutes. Smaller sized treats will require less time.
  6. Cool completely and store in refrigerator. Recipe yields about 15 tablespoon-sized treats.

Caesar loved how these turned out and I was pretty impressed too! Since they were made with ingredients that I actually eat, I gave them a try too. Yes, I tried dog treats. They weren’t bad! Now, I’m looking forward to experimenting with some other treat flavors in the future.

  1. Judy would love these! Typically, I mix flour, peanut butter and chicken broth for quick treats for her 🙂

  2. I LOVE this!! Kali will love these treats! Thank you for sharing, and I will definitely have to taste test (that’s totally normal right?!) 🙂

  3. These seem really easy! I have made them before with a different recipe and they were really difficult because it required hand kneading…why I did that to myself I will never know.

  4. I love the idea of this recipe but I have a pug that has skin allergies to wheat. so oats wouldn’t work is there a substitute I could use for the oats?

  5. I was at the grocery store this morning and couldn’t remember what kind of baby food to get. I did remember sweet potatoes but not the chicken/turkey part. So I got sweet potatoes and applesauce. I am sure they will love them just as well. My dogs will eat just about anything! Thanks for the recipe! 🙂

  6. How long do they keep in the fridge? Do you think they can be put in the freezer if made in bulk?

  7. Oatmeal is not a wheat product, it is an oat product. You can totally make this recipe as it is a great alternative to most other treat recipes that use wheat flour.

  8. Thank you for your comment! However, my vet assured me that oatmeal was safe for dogs and could actually be beneficial due to the fiber content.

  9. I have the female double of your dog, her name is Lucy and she is a rescue dog.

  10. Lucy did not like these, sigh. She is a princess though who has her food cooked for her daily. I thought they were ok though 😉

  11. Hehe lucky girl! Caesar will eat just about anything! Any idea what kind of dog she is? We found Caesar, so we’re not sure, but we think lab/pit.

  12. I have some treats in oven right now, I used beef and mixed veg. my dog Kyro loved the raw batter and is patiently waiting. thanks for the recipe.

  13. I’ve also made these using whole wheat flour if that helps anyone concerned about feeding oats. I can’t wait to try them with the oats, though.

  14. I often freeze my dog’s treats so it’ll take them a little longer to devour them 🙂 They are NOT very lady-like when it comes to eating their treats!

  15. I just made them and my two doggies loved them!!!! I did make a change though. I only had two baby jars of 2 oz each so I added about 3 oz of pumpkin. They just went crazy for these treats. Thanks soooo much!!!!

  16. My Manny’s a lab/pit mix too. Made these today for his Gotcha Day 🙂 7 years ago he came home to his furever home 😀

  17. I bought a paw silicone baker. Can I put this in there and not on a baking sheet?

  18. My Daughter an I make my babies food because of corn an wheat allergies, We use rice, frozen mixed veggies remove the corn then add ground beef ,ground chicken an ground turkey plus there vitamins as everything is about done we add Oat Meal there vet said it was a perfect mixture they love we freeze it in snack bags put 3 of them jn a small freezer bag put all the food in the freezer when you see your snack bag is almost gone defrost one on the counter

  19. I’ve been using oatmeal and oat flour for years for my dog treats. Never had a problem with it.

  20. You can use rice flour. You will need to add xanthan gum or guar gum however. This makes it bind together. I use about a teaspoon per cup of flour.

  21. Yes, at least for the oatmeal part! Not sure what kind of bullet you have, but I know mine wouldn’t be able to handle the mixture, since it’s thick.

  22. How would they do to ship them? I would like to make some and send them as a gift exchange on in.

  23. Hi Patti! These are good for about a week in an air-tight container at room temp. They might ship better if you’re able to vacuum seal them. I know when sending care packages overseas, sometimes adding a slice of bread to the container with baked goods helps keep them fresh!
