Crunchy Momma in the Making

Who knew I would become such a crunchy mom?! I’ve been all about breastfeeding, baby-wearing, and some of those other crunchy mom things since I had Veronica, but I just placed my first order for cloth diapers. Who knew I’d be so excited about buying diapers?

Even after reading a ton of Cloth 101 blog posts, I felt like I was still confused, so I went to one of my internet friends, Jen (I swear, you guys are all named Jen!) for some help. She has the most precious little guy who is always in cloth, and I knew she’d be able to help me out.

In the past, I was slightly against cloth diapering, because I knew it would be some work. I figured that the cost of water and electric that you spend on washing would cancel out what you were saving on buying disposable diapers. Now that we live on post though, we’re actually receiving rebate checks because we stay well under our allotted amount for utilities.

One of the brands that Jen mentioned was bumGenius. After researching them and a few other brands, that’s who I decided to go with. I was pleasantly surprised to see that some of the diapers are all-in-one, and I won’t have to worry about inserts.

I ordered four Freetime all-in-one one-size diapers to give them a shot on Adri. I’ve heard that cloth diapers help with potty training because they don’t give off a dry feeling. One can only hope. I bought three solid girly colors and one really pretty limited edition artist diaper that I’m most excited about. I’m still waiting to see about shipping, because of course it’s free to everywhere except Hawaii and Alaska. I should be invoiced shortly, and these puppies should be on their way. I can’t wait to try them out!

Is cloth diapering something you’d consider?

Love, Alex

  1. We love cloth! We use a mixture of BumGenius and FuzziBunz for the most part. I also like BottomBumpers. We didn’t start until my daughter was about 15 months old, but I so wish we would have started sooner. We’ll definitely be doing cloth from day one with the next one 🙂

  2. I’m for cloth diapering and will probably try it when we have kids. And I would think that cloth diapers have to be cheaper in Hawaii, considering how expensive everything is.

  3. I can say I never tried cloth diapering, I never even thought about it! It seems like a lot of work, so I am interested to see what you think about it!

  4. We did! Used all BumGenius too, so good choice. 😉 They hold a lot (especially if you shove in some extra inserts), and they really do feel dry like a regular diaper (just softer, and not all plastic-y like a disposable). Hope you enjoy it! While it certainly is more work than tossing a disposable in the trash, once you get into a rhythm with it, you won’t even notice that it’s “extra”. Also, baby bottoms are so much cuter in cloth. 😉 Good luck!

  5. I’ve been debating on the cloth for a little bit now. My husband isn’t really on board so I feel like it would be all one sided….which seems a little unfair. I have so many friends that swear by them though. Hopefully your right with the thought of a easier transition for potty training. I also heard bum genius is a great brand! Hopefully it goes well. 🙂
