Sweet, spicy, tangy, smokey. This guava BBQ sauce has it all! Best of all, it’s pretty simple to make!
Growing up in Miami, guava was the flavor of my childhood. Guava on everything! Imagine my surprise, when I discovered how popular it was in Hawaii also!
In Hawaii, you could find guava flavors just about everywhere. In shave ice, cocktails, and ice cream, just to name a few. But my favorite place to find guava was in BBQ. The sweet mixed with smokey is just a flavor combo unlike any other!
Since moving back to the mainland, I’ve made it my mission to grill up some really great guava BBQ. I’ve experimented with making guava BBQ sauce before, but over the weekend I nailed it! Just in time for a friend from Hawaii’s visit!
What better way to try out my BBQ sauce than with Smithfield Extra Tender Pork Back Ribs from Walmart!? These ribs are my go-to for grilling every single time! They’re hand-trimmed, extra-tender and juicy! Whether it’s a weekend BBQ or just casual week night dinner, Smithfield Fresh Pork is always the perfect option!
Smithfield Extra Tender Pork Back Ribs are the ribs that my dad has always uses, and I’ve learned that it’s easy to get these to turn out perfectly, regardless of your grilling experience! My dad is my grilling hero, and you can nominate your own grilling hero here for a chance for them to win $5,000!
The bbq sauce is pretty simple: guava paste, tomato paste, lemon juice, vinegar, plus spices, which all meld together to create a sweet and savory sauce. Usually, you can find guava paste in the hispanic aisle at the grocery store. Apply the guava BBQ sauce liberally before grilling the Smithfield® ribs. Be sure to save some to slather over the cooked ribs for extra flavor!
To keep the ribs extra moist while grilling, my favorite trick is to seal them really well in foil. They go onto the grill just like that. But for tastiest results, make sure to cook them directly on your Weber Grill for a few minutes before serving! That smokiness and char really elevate the flavor!
