Spreading Holiday Cheer with Trees for Troops

One of the toughest parts about being a military family is being far from the rest of your family during the holidays. For me, it’s specifically Christmas – the season where families typically come together to create special memories and traditions.
Sadly, many military families don’t have the option to go home for the holidays or have their extended families come visit them. There’s a sense of missing out when you’re not back in your hometown helping Granny bake and frost sugar cookies or watching Mom put up and decorate the tree.
Although putting up a tree is just a part of celebrating the winter holiday, it’s the details such as picking out the perfect tree or replicating a favorite family recipe that make the season extra special for the troops and their families when far from home. This is one of the major reasons why I love Trees for Troops so much! The Trees for Troops program offers free, farm-grown trees to military members of all branches and their families.
For our first Christmas away from home, John and I were in a new home, in a new state, as new parents. We received a Trees for Troops Christmas tree from one of our local bases. Choosing the perfect real tree and decorating it with our collection of mismatched ornaments has since become part of the holiday tradition for our family! Since that first Christmas, I’ve been sharing Trees for Troops info all over, including within our Family Readiness Groups and on social media.
Getting a real tree for Christmas is a big part of the holiday memory-making experience, and real trees provide business for North American farmers and are better for the environment because they are natural and biodegradable.
This year, the Trees for Troops goal is to donate over 17,000 real Christmas trees, which would make it over 200,000 trees delivered to service members and their families since the inception of Trees for Troops in 2005 (more than 191,000 trees have already been provided to troops)! And, with the help of FedEx, Trees for Troops is able to send trees not only to troops and families within the United States but also overseas.
Trees for Troops is an amazing program, and was recently awarded the Spirit of Hope Award, which recognizes current and former military members, civilians and groups that illuminate the values of patriotism, loyalty, freedom and dedication.
