DIY Doggy Welcome Mat

Ah! I can hardly believe it! This is the week that the movers come to pack up all of our stuff!
We spent the better part of the weekend preparing everything to go. We had to take down the trampoline and play yard out back, plus pack everything we want to keep. I also spent a good amount of time cleaning up around the house as well as reversing damage that my children and fur child have created over the past three and a half years. It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do!
Only of my many projects was getting the fence in the back yard clean. Caesar is full of energy and LOVES to chase the birds in the back yard that try to eat the leftover crumbs of his food. As a result, our white fence was covered in bright orange paw prints from where he tries to climb up and catch the birds. The dirt here in Hawaii is something else! Heaven forbid you get it on your clothes, because it’s not coming off!
Fun fact! Did you know you can mop dog prints off of a fence?! Our fence is plastic, so I took an old mop that was going to get tossed in the moved along with some household cleaner, and gave the fence a quick scrub. I was honestly expecting to have to scrub for hours with a brush, but I’m so glad that wasn’t the case!
With all the time Caesar spends out back chasing birds, he sometimes tries to sneak into the house with muddy paws. I wanted to make a welcome mat especially for him, to help remedy this. I mean, it’s for people to use too, but it has a dog theme. I’ve been dying to make one of these welcome mats, because of how easy they are to customize. I can’t wait to arrive in Kentucky, to be able to make another!
Making your own welcome mat is super simple!
Gather your supplies
I want to Target, to pick everything up, because I knew it would be the only store that would have exactly what I need. You’ll need:
- A blank welcome mat
- Multi-surface paint
- Sponge brushes
- A stencil
- Straight pins
While at Target, I also grabbed a bag of dog food, to pack along with us for Caesar, as we journey to our new home. We’ve been using Purina One® Smartblend® Lamb and Rice Formula Adult Premium Dog Food for a few years now, and I’ve really noticed a positive difference in Caesar.
I originally chose The Purina One Lamb and Rice formula, because it has real lamb as the first ingredient and it’s highly digestible. Caes was having tummy troubles prior to the switch, so high-quality protein was important to me.
Making your DIY welcome mat
To make your mat, start by arranging your stencil on the blank mat. I cut my own stencil out of card stock. Card stock or something similar is ideal, because it’s sturdy and will hold up to the paint.
Secure the stencil to the welcome mat using the straight pins. You’ll want to pin down any corners or really long edges, to make sure the stencil doesn’t come up while you’re painting.
With a paint-saturated brush, DAB the paint onto the mat in the negative spaces of the stencil. Fight the temptation to brush and just dab. It’s more time consuming, but the results are totally worth it. Brushing can result in paint getting under the stencil, and we don’t want messy lines!
Once the painting is complete, carefully lift the stencil and allow the mat to dry completely.
Ta-da! You’ll now have a lovely project to welcome you and your pet inside! Mine turned out even better than expected!
