2 Years in Hawaii
Exactly two years ago, our family of four landed on Oahu for the first time.
It was late and dark when we landed, but I can still vividly remember seeing all the tinkling street lights in the distance.
Although it’s only a 20-ish minute drive from the airport to Schofield, it felt like we were driving for an eternity. It was the signs on the highway indicating how many miles we were from base, that gave me hope that we wouldn’t be on the road for ever.
I recall these two memories fondly every time we’re on the highway after dark. I’ll miss the warm temperatures and crystal clear water when we leave, but it’s the simple memories that I’ll miss most.
There’s also the horrid pink hospital where I gave birth to my last baby. The tree stump shaped like a rabbit, that talks to the girls when we drive by (his name is Mr. Bunny). Occasionally watching helicopters take off from our back yard.
I’ve never been very sentimental about other duty stations, because we usually have the option to pass by them when PCSing. With Hawaii though, we really have no idea if and when we’ll be back. Which kinda makes me sad…
The goal is to make the most of our year and a half-ish left, and enjoy as much of the islands as we can!
