Even with a house full of girls, superheroes are pretty popular around these parts. John has always been a bit of a comic book nerd, so a bit of that has rubbed off on our children. I worried that since we didn’t have a son, John might not be able to pass on his love of superheroes, but Veronica and Adriana have graciously taken the role of sidekicks to John’s action packed obsession.
With kindergarten beginning a little over a month ago for Veronica, lunch ideas were a high priority on my to-do list. Since she isn’t a huge eater, I figured bento-style lunches would be perfect. Veronica is more of snacker, which makes bentos the perfect lunch option for her. With lunch time happening at 10:30, it’s important to me that she fills up enough to stay full for the rest of the day, and small amounts of fun foods, encourage that!
To combine the love of superheroes with lunch time, I came up with a MARVEL inspired bento lunch. It was so easy to put together this cute balanced meal that I know will be enjoyed in the cafeteria!
To start, I took a trip to Walmart to pick up my lunch ingredients along with the new MARVEL Chewy Granola Bars. The Super Hero Snack Bars are are 40% bigger based on weight of 24g Chewy bar, so they’re perfect as an extra snack in the lunchbox.
No bento lunch is complete without a few picks, so I made my own with little MARVEL superheroes and tooth picks. To make your own picks:
- Print images of your favorite MARVEL heroes on white cardstock.
- Cut each of your heroes out.
- Use washi tape to stick a toothpick to the back of each MARVEL superhero cutout.
In just a few minutes, I was able to whip up each food item.
Captain America Shield Fruit Salad
- Dice about three strawberries and place in a cupcake liner, leaving a hole in the center.
- Fill the center hole with blueberries.
- Using a small star-shaped cutter, cut a slice of banana into a star.
- Place the banana star in the center of the blueberries.
Hulk Smash Broccoli
- If desired, fill the bottom of a small container with dip of choice. We like ranch.
- Cut small broccoli florets to fill the top of the container.
Spider Man Cheese
- Use a food-safe marker to draw a spiderweb on cheese that is lined with red wax.
- Take a sharp paring knife and cut out two Spidey shaped eyes. Be careful not to cut too deeply!
Ironman Jelly & Cheese Sandwich
- Using large circular cookie cutters, cut two slices of bread into circles.
- Top one slice of bread with strawberry jelly.
- Using a sharp paring knife, cut a slice of white cheese to look like Ironman’s mask. I used provolone.
- Top jelly layer with cut slice of cheese. Ta-da!
Now really, can it get anymore fun than that?! With 6 different wrappers (Captain America, Hulk, Spider Man, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor) you’ll have no issues including your child’s favorite superhero in their lunch. Our favorite is Captain America! The packaging even includes fun collector cards!
